Council Chamber
The Council Chamber, located within Stoke Newington Town Hall offices, stopped being used in 1965 when the Metropolitan Boroughs of Hackney, Shoreditch and Stoke Newington came together to form the London Borough of Hackney.
This led to some changes to the Council Chamber: the original fixed seating and furniture was removed and a suspended ceiling was fitted which sliced the room in two.
As part of the restoration, this ceiling has now been removed, revealing the Chamber’s stunning dome and vaulted gallery, along with Australian walnut timber panelling, ornate gold cornicing and other character features. The chamber has been brought back to its former glory.
In order to provide a flexible space which can used by a wider range of community groups, new moveable furniture, lights and modern audio visuals have been fitted. This makes the Chamber ideal for:
- meetings
- small performances
- civil ceremonies
The Council Chamber is now fully accessible.
