Funding opportunities

There are a range of funding sources available for schools.

Main previous funding sources:

DCSF Capital Grant

  • One off grant paid to schools after original STP was first approved (pre-2010)
  • £3,750 + £5 per pupil for primary and £5,000 + £5 per pupil for secondary
  • Paid in 50% installments the October and February after submitting STP via Standards Fund under code 40620 2.1a
  • VA Schools are paid via their diocese board
  • Needs to be spent and accounted for before further STP funding. Please check if your school still has your DCSF Capital Grant left to spend

Small Grants

We regularly offer schools the opportunity to apply for a small grant (up to £2,000) to spend on sustainable travel initiatives within their STP Action Plan.

Examples of what schools have spent their small grant funding on:

  • Holding events such as car free days, cycle to school days etc
  • Competitions and incentives to encourage children to walk/cycle
  • Designing and printing leaflets advertising initiatives to parents
  • Cycle or scooter parking
  • Pool bikes for staff or pupils

Mayor's Cycle Parking

  • Easy to mistake Mayor's Cycle Parking as a STP Capital Grant expenditure (many schools received both at the same time)
  • If your school would like to be put forward to receive free cycle parking for pupils please email sta@hackney.gov.uk providing details of your current cycle parking facilities and the demand at your school for cycle parking. Please note we will put forward a case for your school to TfL, however funding is limited so we can make no guarantees
