School Travel Plans
The School Travel Plans pages aim to support schools to encourage sustainable travel to school, in particular walking and cycling.
We can work with you to help you develop a School Travel Plan (STP). Currently, 92 out of 99 schools in Hackney have developed a STP.
There has been a 25% reduction in the number of pupils travelling to school by car since 2007/08.
STP news
- Hackney has picked up a London Cycling Campaign award for the best project for children or young people for its Hackney Bikers' breakfast scheme

The aims of the STP programme are to:
- Significantly reduce the number of car trips on journeys to and from schools
- Encourage more walking and cycling and improve safety on the school journey
- Remove the barriers, both perceived and actual, to walking, cycling and using public transport for school journeys
- Increase the number of young people and adults choosing 'active travel' options over that of the car
- Increase understanding among whole school communities of the travel options that are available to them
- Provide information to allow school communities to understand the benefits of active, sustainable transport and to use this information to inform how they choose to travel
Developing a STP
By developing a STP and keeping this 'active' by completing Annual Reviews your school can help make a positive change to the journey to and from school.
By encouraging safe and sustainable modes of travel, such as walking and cycling, air pollution and traffic congestion are reduced and students benefit from healthier, active lifestyles.
The pages on the left provide useful advice and resources to help you promote sustainable travel at your school.
A newsletter about School Travel Plans in Hackney is published three a year in September, January and July. The latest copies of 'STP News' can be downloaded on the right.
