Hackney Street Leaders
Residents who want to contribute that little bit extra towards making Hackney cleaner, safer and greener can join the Council’s Street Leader scheme.
Street Leaders act as extra eyes and ears for the borough, identifying and reporting local environmental issues that are of concern in their local area, so that the Council can react to these as soon as possible.
The scheme has been running for over 10 years and currently has around 100 members across the borough. To join, please download and complete our
Street Leaders registration form (336KB)
The role of Street Leaders
The Council wants to resolve any issues with the local environment as quickly as possible and, although Council staff monitor and report issues from across the borough as routine, it’s not possible to spot everything.
Street Leaders who are out and about can identify problems as little or as often as is convenient. Many Street Leaders have links to other groups in the borough such as residents associations or schools so they can feedback the concerns of other local people too.
Reports can be made
- by calling us free on 020 8356 6688
- by emailing streetleaders@hackney.gov.uk
- at regular meetings with Council staff and other Street Leaders.
Problems you can report
We do not ask Street Leaders to approach individuals or businesses commiting environmental crimes. We ask them to provide information on issues such as:
- dumped rubbish
- litter
- graffiti and fly posting
- problems with council services such as refuse and recycling collections
- broken street lights
- damaged paving and other dangers on the highway
- dog fouling
- overflowing bins
- abandoned vehicles
- general eye sores or “grot spots” in the local area
The sooner the Council is notified of issues like these, the sooner we can rectify them, making Hackney’s streets and open spaces safer and cleaner for those that use them.
