Swimming in the snow
Hackney Lido Lovers show that there’s still some true grit left
Hardy swimmers at Hackney’s London Fields Lido braved sub-zero temperatures to enjoy a swim in London’s only Olympic-sized outdoor heated pool on 6 January.
The Lido, which has enduring appeal for London’s all-year-round swimmers, was reopened in 2006 following a major Council refurbishment. The 50m pool owes much of its winter popularity to its state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly heating system, which keeps the pool temperature at a constant 25 C.
Cllr Nargis Khan, Hackney Council Cabinet Member for Community Services said: “Hackney’s Lido lovers have not let the cold snap get in the way of enjoying their swim, and we're really pleased to be able to keep the pool open all year round for them. It is London's only heated Olympic-sized pool and it seems the snow has not put swimmers off their stroke."
