Plans underway for Local Democracy Week 08
The focus for this year’s Local Democracy Week is on Hackney’s Youth Parliament Elections.
Candidates will be nominated from the four Youth Forums to sit on the new Youth Parliament. Local young people will be given the chance to vote in the new academic year.
The results will be announced at an event on Thursday 16 October. The event will include other activities and stalls from local and national organisations. It is running from 3-5.30pm. More details to follow soon.

Zoop, Zoop is a hit with audiences
Four performances of Zoop, Zoop, Hackney! Who Asked U? took place in May this year in the Arcola. The performances were followed by a session run by the Youth Parliament that discussed issues that came out of the play and outlined how young people could get involved with politics in their area.
The feedback from the play was good. Following a questionnaire that over 90 viewers completed:
- 82% thought the play was ‘excellent’ and ‘very good’
- 69% believe they understand more about democracy as a result
- 93% would like to be involved with more activities like this in the future
There are plans to develop Zoop Zoop following its national success. A DVD is being developed by the Arcola and the Council is now working with the Hansard Society to make the play more widely available.
