Hackney Tell Us Once Service
When someone dies you may need to notify a number of different government departments and local services about the death, usually providing them with the same information. The Tell Us Once service will make this process much easier for you.
What is Tell Us Once?
When someone has died in Hackney, we can help tell all the relevant people and organisations who need to know on your behalf and you will no longer need to provide each organisation or Hackney Services with a copy of the death certificate.
Should a death occur outside of Hackney you can still use the Tell Us Once service, provided the Registrars Office in the area where the death took place is a local authority signed up to the Tell Us Once programme.
How can the Tell Us Once service help you?
When someone dies, the death needs to be registered with the Registrar and with your permission we can give the information to the Department for Work and Pension (DWP).
The DWP will then pass the information onto relevant government departments and council services.
Who can we give information to?
We can contact the following departments within the DWP including:
- The Pension Service
- Job Centre Plus
- Child Benefits (HM Revenues and Customs)
- Tax Credits
- The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA)
- The Identity and Passport Office
If you ask us to we can also contact the following local council services:
- Adult and Older Peoples Services
- Children and Young Peoples Services
- Blue Badge
- Housing and Council Tax Benefits
- Council Tax
- Electoral Services
- Library Services
- Hackney Homes
- Payments owed to the council
What information will you need to give to us?
To make sure we pass on the right information to the DWP and other organisations we contact on your behalf, we need the following information about the person who has died:
- National Insurance Number
- Passport Number
- Driving Licence Number
- Details of any benefits received
- Blue Badge (which will be retained)
We may ask for information about:
- Next of kin
- Any surviving husband/wife or civil partner
- Anybody who is getting child benefit on their behalf
- The person dealing with the deceased's estate.
If you are not the next of kin, or the person dealing with the deceased's estate, you can still use the service if you have the authority to act on their behalf.
How will we treat your information?
We will treat the information you give us confidentially and securely.
The organisations we give your information will only use it to update records, to end services, benefits entitlement and to resolve any outstanding issues as requested within the Tell Us Once service.
