Building Materials, Scaffoldings, Containers and Temporary Crossovers

Do I need a licence? Can I have a licence?

For hoarding, scaffoldings, containers and materials on the highway and temporary crossovers, you will need a licence.

You need to make an appointment for our officers to visit your site. This can be done by calling our Hackney Service Centre on 0208 356 4970. A mutually convenient appointment will be arranged with an Environmental Enforcement Officer who will meet you on site. The Officer will inspect the footway, and measure up the area to be utilised in order to determine the fee and deposit you will need to pay.

Why do I need to pay a deposit?

This is in case any damage is caused to the highway. The officer re-inspects the site after it is clear and, if there is damage, this will be deducted from the deposit to cover re-instatement work. If there is no damage, the deposit will be refunded in full.

Can I extend my licence?

Yes, it may be possible to extend your licence. Please contact us in writing, stating your name, address, the licence number, the type of licence (scaffolding, hoarding etc) you require, and how long you want to extend it for. Please refer to the bottom of the page for the address.

How long does this process take?

The process can take up to a week.
