Overview: Hackney gets set for the 2012 Games

Hackney's Mayor Jules Pipe has published his manifesto for 2012, setting out the lasting benefits he is striving to secure for the borough.

Hackney will host a third of the Games area, and Mayor Pipe is determined this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity will bring:

• Better public transport
• Skills, training and job opportunities for residents and businesses
• Improved sports and leisure facilities for all
• A better environment
• A boost for culture and the arts
• Increased promotion of Hackney as a great place for living, working, visiting and investing

Mayor Pipe said the manifesto makes it very clear to the Government, the Olympic Delivery Authority and the rest of the world what Hackney wants for its residents, businesses and environment, and how we are working to achieve this.

Hackney Council is committed to helping to deliver the best Games ever. But its top priority is making sure it secures the best possible long-term benefits for Hackney residents.

Major improvements to public transport have already been achieved. The borough will be properly linked to the tube network for the first time via the extension of the East London Line, and major investment in the North London Line will bring improved trains and services.

The media and broadcast centres for journalists reporting on the Games will be located in the Olympic Park within Hackney Wick. Around 20,000 journalists will report to a global audience of up to three billion.

After the Games finish, Hackney Council aims to make sure the centres are transformed into a major new employment hub for East London.

Hackney Council is also working to create a thriving new neighbourhood at Hackney Wick, including affordable new homes, places to eat, shops and business space, alongside indoor sports facilities and green spaces and parks. This will give the area a much needed boost.

The Council is working with local and national partners and organisations, as well as the other host boroughs for 2012, to make sure the Games bring a lasting legacy for Hackney and all of East London.
