The Project
With co-ordination from the Building Exploratory local artist and designer Florian Kremb worked with 50 pupils from Hackney Free and Parochial school over several months.
Through a series of creative research and design tasks the young people compiled material exploring their own favourite parts of Hackney, key facts about the borough, identity and citizenship. Together with Florian they developed a concept of ‘parts’ – considering all the very different and diverse aspects that make Hackney such a great place.

The young people used a variety of creative techniques, including printing, spray painting, model making, mapping and photography. They took field trips exploring Hackney and did online research on various aspects of the borough.
The young people’s suggestions and images informed the final artwork that Florian produced. The programme the young people followed also gave them an insight into how a professional designer works with first hand experience of the commissioning process.
Each has a presence through their own silhouettes and ideas embodied in the designs, which invite the viewer to examine more closely the overlooked details and delights of Hackney’s built environment.
