Underwood Street conservation area

Underwood Street Conservation Area was first designated in 1990. It comprises a fine group of warehouses and other important historic buildings. These buildings were constructed at the turn of the 20th century. The conservation area has a coherent character and typology. The orthogonal street layout derives from the historical layout of walled gardens which used to occupy the area before its development.

Streets within the conservation area have a uniform building line with very few breaks or gaps and the buildings are tall in relation to the widths of the streets. This creates a canyon like appearance that offers a particularly strong feeling of enclosure.

Cabinet approved an extension to the conservation area on 27 November 2023. This was following a full review and community consultation.
