Visitor parking

As a visitor to the borough, you can park in a pay and display parking bay, display a visitor voucher, or park in one of the Council's car parks for all-day parking.

Pay and display

A pay and display machineDuring the controlled hours of a CPZ, you can park in either a 'pay and display only' or a 'shared use' parking bays (combined permit holder and pay and display bays).

These bays offer a range of different parking periods for visitors, during the controlled hours (e.g 2, 4, or 10 hours). The days and hours that these bays operate are shown on the sign plates and on the instruction plate on the pay and display machines.

The instruction plate on the pay and display machines show the cost of the parking time, the minimum return times permitted for the bay and the closest alternative machine, in case the machine is out of order.

When parking during the controlled hours a ticket must be purchased on arrival from a pay and display machine covering the full duration you are wishing to park, and must clearly be displayed on the vehicle windscreen.

In addition you are now able to pay for parking in Hackney using your mobile phone. Pay By Phone is a quick and secure way to pay for parking. Instead of having to find the right change for a pay and display machine, you can simply use your mobile phone to pay and it will be charged to your credit or debit card. To find out more details on how the scheme works please visit the mobile phone parking page.

The pay and display charges for each CPZ are shown below.

Pay and display tariffs are changing from 1st April 2012. Please ensure you pay the correct fee to cover your whole stay. As you add coins to the machine the expiry time is shown so note this before purchasing a ticket.

Please view the CPZ maps which show the locations of the bays or contact us using the details on the right.

Pay and display FAQs

Can disabled Blue Badge and Companion Badge holders park in pay and display and shared use bays?

Disabled persons Blue Badge and Companion Badge holders are allowed free and unlimited parking time in pay and display and shared use parking bays and do not need to display a clock.

Can I park for free if a pay and display machine is out of order?

A Civil Enforcement Officer will issue a parking ticket if a valid pay and display ticket is not clearly displayed during the controlled hours.

If the machine is out of order, users must use the Pay By Phone system instead. Alternatively use another pay and display machine if possible. The closest alternative machine will be displayed on the machine insert. If you cannot locate the alternative machine, or have lost money without receiving a pay and display ticket, you can contact us using the details on the right for further advice. We will endeavour to repair all machines within the shortest possible time.

What if  I've lost money in a pay and display machine and it hasn't given me a ticket?

If you have lost money in a machine and have not received a valid parking ticket, please contact us using the details on the right. We will then investigate the faulty machine, and if appropriate, issue a refund in the form of a parking voucher which will provide half a days parking time in the parking zone where the problem was experienced.

Do the pay and display machines provide change?

Change will not be dispensed. Please ensure you use the correct amount when using the pay and display machines.  If you do not have change an alternative is to use the Pay By Phone instead..

What happens if I purchase time beyond the controlled hours of the CPZ?

If you pay for time beyond the operational hours of a parking zone, the time paid for will roll over to the start of operational hours of the next day. This will be shown on your pay and display ticket. It is therefore possible to purchase visitor parking time in advance if required.

What is a minimum return time?

The minimum return period is the time that you are allowed to return to a pay and display or shared use parking bay after you have left it. This will generally be 2 hours depending on the location of the parking bay. The minimum return time is designed to give other motorists the opportunity to use a particular parking space and are shown on the pay and display inserts and on the parking signs.
