Frequently Asked Questions
Gaming Machines
This function will be reviewed in the near future due to the introduction of the Gambling Act 2005.
What are ‘gaming’ machines and ‘amusements with prizes’ machines?
These are ‘one-armed bandit’ machines which offer cash or cash and tokens as prizes. These machines are different to those described as ‘games of skill’, where there is no payout; such as question and answer type of games, or ‘space invader’ type machines.
Do all machines require a permit?
‘Amusements with prizes’ machines require a permit under Section 34 of the Gaming Act 1968. The ‘games of skill’ type machines do not require a permit under the Gaming Act.
You are strongly advised to check with Customs and Excise regarding their requirements, as a duty must be paid on all machines.
How much does a permit cost?
For a machine that pays out in cash and tokens the permit cost is £32.The permit cost for a machine that has an all cash payout is £250.
How long does a permit last?
A permit lasts three years from the date of approval.
Does each machine require a permit?
No, permits are required per establishment.
Do I require a permit for a machine in a take-away restaurant, pub or club?
‘Amusements with prize’ permits are granted for amusement centres only. Machines classified as ‘games of skill’ that do not payout, (ie there are no “prizes”), do not require a permit. Pubs and clubs are also permitted to have gaming machines as this is covered in the Licensing Act 2003 and the Gaming Act 2005.
How can I apply for a permit?
You are required to complete and return an application form with the correct fee and a floor plan. The floor plan is required to show the layout of the premises, and should clearly show the area set aside for all cash machines, if there are all cash and cash/token machines situated in the same premises.
