Sex Establishments
Sex Establishment legislation relates to sex shops, sex cinemas and sex encounter establishments.
Does my Premises licence cover the provision of striptease entertainment?
Striptease entertainment requires to be licensed separately as a Sex Encounter Establishment. Your existing Premises licence covers the sale of alcohol, provision of regulated entertainment and/or provision of late night refreshment only.
Why is a Sex Encounter Licence needed?
Legislation states that when one or more dancers expose breasts, genitalia and/or excretory organs a Sex Encounter Licence is required by law.
Can I hold a one off event involving stripping?
No, you are required to register your premises as a Sex Encounter Establishment for a one off event. Legislation does not differentiate between a one off event or premises holding events regularly.
If my premises is registered as a Sex Encounter Establishment, can I sell alcohol?
If you have a valid Premises Licence under the Licensing Act 2003 you are able to sell alcohol.

Can I show R18 films in my cinema?
No, R18 films can only be shown at premises licensed as a sex cinema.
Can I sell R18 video’s by mail order?
No, R18 video’s can only be sold at a registered sex shop.
Does the London Borough of Hackney have a Licence Policy?
Yes, Hackney Council does have a Licence Policy. Each application is decided on merit and a report is submitted to Committee for consideration. The report will detail:
- Whether the premises are near a secondary, primary or nursery school or place of worship.
- The proximity of other licensed premises.
