Skip Licence
Do I require a licence for having a skip?
A valid skip licence is required if you are planning to place the skip on the public highway.
A skip licence is not required if the skip is going to be placed on:
•A private road,
•In your own drive or garden,
•On a council estate (for this you need to contact your Local Housing Office for permission)

How can I obtain a licence?
Application forms can be downloaded from the London Borough of Hackney internet page. Please make sure that you fully complete your contact details. You must also know which skip Hire Company you will be using – It is not possible to progress an application without them.Forms can be delivered by hand, post or by fax. Please refer to the address and contact details at the bottom of the page. There is an admin fee for this licence; this can be paid by cash, credit card or cheque.
I require a skip for 30 minutes, do I need a licence?
If contractors are loading for only 30 minutes then you do not need a licence.
Can you please recommend a skip company to me?
No, we advise all our customers to look for companies in local directories.
I need a skip licence as soon as possible, what should I do?
Skip licences usually take up to 3 days to be issued, but if you need a licence urgently please contact the Hackney Service Centre on 020 356 4970. Please get your application to us as soon as possible.
Can I please have an extension to my licence?
Licences are usually granted for up to 6 weeks, depending on the location of the skip. You will then be required to apply for a new licence.
Can you backdate licences?
We are unable to backdate licences.
Can I store materials alongside the skip?
You need a separate licence to store materials. It’s called a Building Materials Licence.
I would like to report a skip overflowing
I would like to report an abandoned skip.
I would like to report a skip that’s blocking a route.

Everyone is using my skip, what should I do?
London Borough of Hackney cannot take any action. We advise customers to have their rubbish ready to load into the skip, and arrange for it to be on site for the shortest time possible to stop others using it.
Are there any community skips?
Yes, London Borough of Hackney does provide community skips. Please contact the Hackney Service Centre on 020 8356 4970. You will be advised of your nearest skip.
