Walk to Work Day – Thursday, 24 April 2008
Walk to Work Day is back again for its second year on Thursday, 24 April. People all over London will be leaving their cars at home and putting their feet first as they take up the challenge to walk to work.
Walking is a great way to get fit and stay healthy, and, best of all, it’s free. Numerous studies have shown the health benefits of walking, from losing weight to lowering blood pressure, increasing bone density and enhancing mental well-being.
You don’t have to walk all the way to work to take part in Walk to Work Day– you can get off a stop earlier on your bus or rail journey and walk the rest of the way.
Planning your journey
If you already walk some of the way, doing a bit more won't be difficult. A mile will take you 20-25 minutes if you walk briskly and you’ll meet daily exercise targets.
To plan your walk to work go online to www.walkit.com or www.tfl.gov.uk/walking.
Business Challenge and Prizes
Hackney Council, Transport for London and Living Streets will be also opening up the challenge to Hackney’s businesses to encourage their staff to walk more. Over a four-week period businesses all over London will be competing to see who can record the highest number of steps.
Participating business will be entered into a draw run by Living Streets to win a digital camera. Hackney will also be rewarding the local business who records the highest number of steps within the Borough, offering two one hour personal training sessions to the individual and a healthy lunch to the winning team.
To register you business for the Work to Work Challenge, contact Louisa Clarke, Hackney Council on 020 8356 8189 or louisa.clarke@hackney.gov.uk by Monday, 21 April.
