Hackney 2012 Unit

Hackney Council has a team of people who have been working since 2006 to make the most of the Games for the people of Hackney.

The Olympic and Paralympic Games will have an effect on almost everything the Council does. The 2012 Unit works alongside colleagues in transport, health and safety, education, culture, community engagement, sports and much more.

Olympic bodies

Hackney is one of the five Olympic host boroughs. The main bodies involved in making the Games happen include:

  • International Olympic Commission - responsible for the Games and deciding the host city
  • Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) - build the venues and infrastructure for the Games
  • UK government - funds a lot of infrastructure development
  • Department of Culture, Media and Sport - has oversight of the Games being successful
  • Department of Communities and Local Government - leading on securing the long-term future of the Park
  • Greater London Authority and Mayor - signed the agreement to host the Games and represent the host city
  • London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) – responsible for the preparation and staging of the Games
  • London Development Authority - regional development. They bought the land for the Games and currently lead on making sure the Park has a sustainable legacy
  • Olympic Park Legacy Company - will take up responsibility for developing the site after the Games to offer a sustainable future for the needs of London
  • Five Olympic host boroughs: Hackney, Newham, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets and Greenwich. The five boroughs often work together where a coordinated approach is needed

What’s going on

There is a lot happening right now that is a direct result of the Games:

  • Construction and regeneration of some of Hackney’s most deprived areas
  • Training and employment opportunities
  • Cultural and community events
  • Extra sports participation in schools
  • Better provision of sports facilities for disabled and non-disabled people

We want to make sure that Hackney residents are not adversely affected by the Games coming to London. This includes reducing disruption, noise and dust from construction, as well as planning for the changes that will occur as a result of so many people from so many different countries coming into the area for a relatively short period of time.

The 2012 Unit is also very involved in what happens to Hackney after the Olympic and Paralympic Games have finished. We are doing everything we can to ensure that the physical and social legacy left by the Games results in long-term improvements in the careers, living conditions and lives of Hackney’s people.

It’s also important to us that people are aware of the impact the Games are already having on Hackney, as well as the opportunities that will come up nearer the time.
