Workplace travel plan

What is a workplace travel plan?

Providing sustainable travel options for employees and customers makes good business sense. It can save time, improve the environment and when you add the associated costs like staff expenses, car park charges and fleet management costs, it offers financial savings too.

Hackney Council are here to help improve your organisation's efficiency and productivity by giving your staff wider travel options. These include:

  • Car sharing and car clubs
  • Public transport
  • Cycling and walking
  • Reducing the need to travel through home and flexible working

We can help you set up a 'workplace travel plan' - a business management tool that develops and promotes sustainable travel options for your staff saving your organisation and employees time and money.

We can also identify sources of funding and provide advice, information and support, tailored to your strategic business needs.

Business benefits

  • Cost savings for your business. Effectively managing your organisation's journeys will reduce costs associated with business travel (like staff expenses, car park charges, congestion charging and fleet management costs), saving your organisation money and time
  • A more attractive employer. Providing and encouraging travel options will help you improve staff retention and recruitment by making your organisation even more employee focused. By positively supporting your employees' needs, they will be more satisfied and more productive
  • Achieve carbon reduction. Enhance your environmental credentials by being part of the solution that will make a local and global difference
  • A healthier, more productive workplace. Promoting active travel options such as walking and cycling will improve the motivation, health and fitness of your employees - this improves productivity and reduces sickness absence. • More travel options for your business. By promoting greater travel choices, you'll enhance your core business prospects by giving employees, visitors and customers more ways of reaching you. It will also help alleviate car parking pressures at your site
  • Be an employer of choice. Demonstrating your commitment to corporate social responsibility, you'll build a better reputation with staff, key stakeholders and across your local community

Barclay's cycle superhighway

Barclays cycle superhighways are new cycle lanes that run into central London from outer London to provide cyclists with safer, faster and more direct journeys into the city - perfect for your staff to use for their commute to work! Using the superhighways for business trips also means reduced costs associated with business travel.

You and your workplace

In order to support cyclists using the highways at the work-end of their journey, TfL is offering businesses along the Barclays cycle superhighways the opportunity to sign up for products and services. If your organisation is:

  • located within 1.5km of a superhighway route
  • has a minimum of 50 employees and
  • has not had a planning requirement to provide cycle facilities or develop a travel plan since April 2008

What is available to my business as part of the scheme?

  • cycle storage (the business will be responsible for installation)
  • cycle training for employees to improve their skills, safety and confidence

  • An events calendar so your business can take part in London, national and international cycling events
  • support and guidance with promoting cycling and safety to your staff
