Hackney wins best bike borough
Hackney Council won an award for cycling at the prestigious London Transport Awards last week (Tuesday, April 4).
The London Transport Awards, open to all London boroughs and transport organisations, are about recognising initiatives that have made a difference to transport in London.
Hackney Council’s “transport strategy, vision and commitment to cycling” enabled them to beat off stiff competition winning the Cycling Award for 2006.
Hackney is ranked number one in the UK in terms of growth in cycling. In 2001 the proportion of journeys to work by bike was 6.8% - an increase of almost 70% from 1991. The London wide increase was only 23 percent during the same period.
The increase in cycling in Hackney is also reflected in the huge increase in local London Cycling Campaign membership (942 members in 2005, an increase of 90% since 2002) and is a demonstration of the Council’s work on raising travel awareness and infrastructure improvements.
Fiona Fletcher-Smith, Corporate Director for Neighbourhoods and Regeneration, said:
“This is a wonderful and well deserved accolade for Hackney Council. It recognises the accomplishments over the last three years in developing and improving all areas of transportation, including cycling. The Council is highly committed to promote cycling as an environmentally friendly and safe mode of transport in the borough. The Hackney Cycling Plan will allow us to continue to make great progress and make Hackney one of the best places for cycling in London.”
Hackney’s progress has been widely recognised. Its commitment has also been acknowledged by a short-listing for the National Transport Awards in the cycling category and as a Cycling Demonstration Town by Cycle England.
