Hackney students receive their GCSE results

Hackney GCSE results breach historic 50% barrier

For the first time more than half the pupils in Hackney schools received five or more A*-C GCSE grades. Provisional figures released on 24th August show that 51% of Hackney pupils gained five or more good GCSEs.

This is up 4% on last year’s record result and continues four years of non-stop improvement. This year the increase in Hackney’s schools performance is three times faster than the rest of England, where results only went up 1.2 percentage points. In just four years Hackney schools’ GCSE results have improved by two thirds on the 2002 figure.

Chair of The Learning Trust Sir Mike Tomlinson C.B.E. said, “Well done to all our students. Your hard work has paid off. By achieving the best GCSE results in Hackney’s history you’ve proved just what Hackney schools can do.

“I also want to thank and congratulate our excellent Headteachers and staff. Together with parents, governors and other school supporters you have delivered four years of dramatic improvements. Thanks to you Hackney school results are improving at a much faster rate than the rest of England.“

Alan Wood, chief executive of The Learning Trust said, “Brilliant, just brilliant. This is a proud day for everyone involved in Hackney’s schools.

“We have some of the most talented, committed and hardworking pupils around, and today they proved it. Well done, to all our pupils and staff.”

Mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe, said, "Four years ago, fewer than one-third of Hackney's kids got 5 good GCSEs - now more than half achieve this - a fantastic result. I pay tribute to the hard work of Hackney's students, as well as the parents, teachers, governors and everyone at the Council and Learning Trust who have helped deliver such impressive results."
