Woodberry Down Regeneration Scheme
The biggest home building programme in the borough has taken a further step forward with Hackney Council announcing the developers for the Woodberry Down regeneration scheme.
Under the first phase of the plans 1,350 new homes will be built on the four ‘Kick Start’ areas by the Development consortium of Berkeley Homes and Circle Anglia. The kick start areas are Woodberry Grove North, The Old School site; Oakend House / Parkfield House / 151 Woodberry Grove and 5 to 55 Newton Close.
Work is likely to begin first on the Old School site and the initial flats are due for completion towards the end of 2007. Of the 1,350 new homes 457 homes are for social renting, 196 homes for shared ownership and 906 homes for outright sale. Cllr Jamie Carswell, who holds the Council’s housing brief, said: “We’re delighted to be able to move forward the redevelopment of Woodberry Down.
“Residents will shortly see work being undertaken on the site, one of the largest regeneration projects in Europe, bringing the community together one step closer to the sustainable, modern living environment that they deserve”. He added: “The regeneration of Woodberry Down is a major priority for the Council and we’re confident that the redevelopment will make a real difference to the quality of life for residents”.

Under the plans, which have been worked up with residents, the area will be transformed. Taking 15 years the work will see the building of 4,300 new homes. The 1,458 existing affordable houses, which are old and run down, will be replaced with new eco-friendly homes.
The remit is also to create sustainable communities through a range of different homes, from social renting to private ownership. Current council tenants residents will be guaranteed new homes.
