Hackney's Leona - X-Factor winner 2006

Hackney’s got the X-Factor

Hackney’s own singing sensation Leona Lewis, has won this year’s X-Factor.

Last week, Leona was given the homecoming of a lifetime at the Hackney Empire. Leona returned to the borough where she grew up, to receive a rapturous reception from hundreds of fans who had flocked to the Empire to see her sing.

As she emerged from a limousine, looking every inch the celebrity in a chic black coat and heels, she was greeted with cheers and screams from the waiting crowd. Inside the theatre, Leona sang a few of the songs she has wowed the X-Factor’s judges with, including ‘I Will Always Love You’ and ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow.’

Leona paid tribute to her borough, saying she loved Hackney’s atmosphere and the fantastic people who live here.

Leona’s mum Maria, a social worker for Hackney Council said, “We are all so proud of Leona. She is a Hackney girl through and through, which is why is was so great to see her coming back to her roots and singing for the friends, family and community that have supported her.”

Leona emerged triumphant over singer Ray Quinn from Liverpool in the live final on Saturday to become the eventual winner of X-Factor 2006. One thing was for sure, Leona certainly got Hackney’s vote.

Hackney Council’s Film Location Office worked with the X-Factor to make the event a success. For more information on filming in Hackney see the filming pages on this website or call 0208 356 3541.
