Discover how easy it is to recycle

Hackney Council’s recycling team have put together some helpful tips and reminders to help you recycle as much as possible this festive period.

It ‘s estimated that in Britain we will create more than three million tonnes of rubbish over the festive period. More than half of this can be recycled.

Follow these simple tips and reminders for a green Christmas.

  • Recycle your wrapping paper, cards, glass, tins and cans and the foil from your turkey in your Green Box kerbside collection. If you live in a high rise property, you can recycle your wrapping paper, tins and cans, and glass in the five recycling bins found on most estates. Alternatively, you can recycle paper, tins, cans, plastic bottles and glass at any of the 80 recycling banks located across the borough. To find your nearest bank, phone the recycling hotline on 020 8356 6688.
  • Cardboard boxes left over from presents can be recycled in your Green Box.
  • Buy rechargeable batteries this year for all toys and gadgets, this will help save on the millions of batteries that are disposed every year.
  • Compost is great for the garden. Start to compost over the festive period using your vegetable peelings from dinner and within six months to a year, you’ll have a free, nutritious compost to help make your garden dazzle in summer. The Council offers compost bins at heavily subsidised prices. Phone 08000 85 80 88 to order yours today.
  • Make room for this season’s new trends by clearing out your wardrobe and taking unwanted clothes to the textile banks located at some recycling banks across the borough. You can also place them in the Green Box, take them to your local charity shop.
  • Over eight million real Christmas trees will be bought this year, most of which will be thrown away. If you choose a real tree this year, recycle it using the services offered by Hackney Council.
  • Why not make a New Years resolution that you can keep this year, and pledge to recycle more things?
