Big changes to recycling

Big changes to recycling

Following trial schemes which resulted in a 20 per cent increase in waste recycling over the past year, recycling will become compulsory for all residents in street level properties from 1 March. This is part of a drive to make recycling easier and encourage more people to do their bit for the environment.

Other developments mean that residents recycle plastic bottles in their Green Box collection for the first time. This service was introduced after the Council sourced an ethical and environmentally sound means of recycling plastic.

The Blue Bin food waste recycling service is also being expanded borough wide – for residents in street level properties – following successful trials involving 14,000 Hackney households.

At the same time, trials begin on selected estates, to work out the best method of recycling for those who live in estates and high-rise properties.

Information outlining changes to the recycling service will be delivered to all street level properties and some estates. Advisors can answer residents’ questions and will hand out a booklet that explains the service changes.

Hackney currently recycles around 18 per cent of its waste, but is committed to increasing this significantly in the future.
