New centre offers golden opportunity for Hackney business

A new training and business centre aimed at helping Hackney’s 7000 small businesses take advantage of the Olympic jobs gold rush opened its doors this month. Hackney Community College’s Centre of Vocational Excellence (CoVE), at Morley Hall in London Fields, offers state-of-the-art training facilities.

Workers will be able to gain the necessary skills and training to benefit from the job opportunities created by the successful Olympic bid and other regional developments.

Speaking at the CoVE launch on17 January, Mayor Jules Pipe, welcomed the idea of the centre. He said: “We have a golden opportunity to capitalise on the Olympics and create opportunities for new homes, new businesses and new careers in the East End.

“The launch of this Centre of Vocational Excellence exemplifies the forwardlooking vision that is needed for us to take advantage of the many opportunities that lie ahead. “There are over 7,000 small businesses in Hackney – the life-blood of Hackney’s economy – this centre will ensure they receive the best possible support.”

Local entrepreneur Ali Kocu has worked with the college to prepare a syllabus for apprenticeships in Turkish cooking. He said: “I am hoping to sustain and expand my business by obtaining appropriate training and support from the Community College, Hackney Council, Business Link and other local business initiatives.”

Chris Yiannakou, the college’s business development director, added: “The state-of-theart training and conference centre at Morley Hall will focus on providing flexible training in response to employers' needs and the local skill needs. The Community College is not only providing education and skills for local people, but, we want to be the first port of call for fulfilling business training needs.”
