Christmas and the New Year celebrations are now over and Hackney Council and Recycle for London are expecting a bumper amount of recycling. The festivities are expected to have generated almost 500,000 tonnes of waste in the capital, including over 90 million bottles, 61 million drinks cans and enough wrapping paper to cover Hyde Park four times over.

Council staff are ready for a record amount of recycling this month following the introduction of new schemes and improved recycling facilities across the borough. Jessica Crowe, Deputy Mayor of Hackney Council, said: “It’s getting really easy to recycle in Hackney. This New Year make a resolution to make Hackney greener. Whether it’s using your Green Box as much as possible or helping a neighbour to get in the recycling habit, there is a lot you can do."

Hackney Council is also asking residents to make some green resolutions for 2006:

  • Slim your bin – take up the challenge to cut the number of rubbish bags you throw out each week. Can you halve your bin? It’s easy when you start to recycle all you can.
  • Pledge to get more people involved in recycling this year – show your neighbour, a colleague or a family member how easy it is to recycle. Or you could take it one step further and become a Hackney Green Champion.
  • Take a packed lunch – it’s often healthier and cheaper than buying prepared sandwiches. By using refillable containers you also stop a lot of rubbish from being thrown away.

Trees

Trees can make rich compost if you recycle them. If you have garden waste collection you can leave your tree next to your brown bin on your collection day. Alternatively during January you can recycle your tree at Millfields Depot, Millfields Rd, Clapton E5 Mon-Fri 8 am to 3.30 pm, Sat 8 am to 12 noon.

Christmas cards

Last year Hackney residents helped save 20,000 trees and supported the Woodland Trust. To recycle your cards take them to the Town Hall Mare Street or branches of Tesco or WHSmith.

Wrapping paper

Over Christmas the government estimates that in the UK 83 square km of wrapping paper will end  up in rubbish bins. Unless wrapping paper is ‘foil’ it can be recycled in a green box or paper recycling banks.
