'Stars of Hackney’ light up Youth Awards
The outstanding achievements of Hackney’s young people were celebrated at the 6th Hackney Youth Awards at Hackney Empire on the 4 July 2006.
More than 80 people received awards for their contribution to their clubs or community over the last year. But Shanu Henry, age 16, Elif Beckwith Yildirim, age 15, Gabriel Ogundana, age 18, Kane Shakarho, age 16, and Kalyn Maries, age 16 were singled out for their exceptional commitment or achievements.
Hackney’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, Rita Krishna, said: "The awards celebrate the talent and commitment of young people in Hackney, and are an important way to recognise the great work of outstanding individuals.
“They are the stars of Hackney and the positive images of young people on show at the Empire are a fantastic rebuttal to the negative portrayal of our youth.”
Other awards on the night included the Millennium Volunteer awards, which are given to young people age 16 to 24 who have achieved 200 hours of voluntary work in Hackney; peer mentoring awards for young people who have completed the mentoring course at The Grove; and the Jack Petchey awards where young people receive a medal, certificate and £200 to spend at their club.
Entertainment on the night featured some of Hackney’s exceptional young talent with performances from Raw Skills, Vo’cab and Tugga War.
The awards were organised by Hackney Council's Youth Service in partnership with Hackney Voluntary Action's Millennium Volunteer project and Connexions. They aim to highlight the care and hard work young people put into the community.
