Kings Hall Leisure Centre Re-Opened

Hackney Council is delighted to announce that following the major fire at Kings Hall Leisure Centre on 22nd May, we have reopened the Pools, Fitness Centre and Aerobics Studio, with a very slightly modified programme, from Monday 19th June.

School swimming classes and other user groups have been contacted to inform them of the re-opening, and will be invited to enter the newly cleaned and repaired building through a temporary entrance, to the rear, off Clapton Square.

At this stage only the downstairs, rear section of the building is open, but the temporary facilities in place are fully accessible for disabled users. For full details of the public sessions available in both Pools, the Fitness Centre and Aerobics Studio, please log onto the GLL website (www.gll.org), or call the centre on 020 8985 2158.

These temporary measures will be in place while the remainder of the clearing, repair and refurbishment works are scoped and completed. We will update users at the centre and via the Hackney Council and GLL websites as this work develops.

Councillor Nargis Khan, Cabinet member for Community Services, said: “That we are able to announce such progress, less than a month after the building was knocked out of action, is due to the dedicated efforts of both GLL and Council staff. Working together, as well as with neighbouring authorities to find alternative facilities in the interim, we are now able to invite the public back to Kings Hall.

“The Council would like to pay tribute to the work of our staff who have helped make such great progress. To GLL and the Fire Service who did such an excellent job on the day of the fire in getting centre users away to safety, and since then with the clear-up and refurbishment. We hope that centre users will appreciate their efforts and bear with us while we finish the job.”

Mark Sesnan, Managing Director of GLL, said: "All our staff and our Hackney partners have worked tremendously hard over the last few weeks, to get the facilities back open to our customers. As far as possible it will be business as usual whilst the renovations take place."
