Council Tax freeze for 2006-07

Hackney Council will not be increasing its part of the council tax bill this year.
However, the overall bill does rise because it includes the charge made by the Greater London Authority (GLA) and the Mayor of London. The GLA part of the bill is increasing by 13.3 per cent which means the overall bill will rise by 2.7 per cent. The GLA, which runs London-wide services including the Metropolitan police, the tube and buses, is increasing its part of the bill to pay for the 2012 Olympics and more neighbourhood policing.
Mayor Jules Pipe said: “Hackney’s share of the council tax is a zero per cent increase, but the budget will still mean more money for youth services, street cleaning, schools and many other important services for residents.
He added: “For the fourth year running there are no cuts in this budget. We will deliver more services through greater efficiency and an increase in government grant so residents do not have to foot the bill.”
The Council’s decision is expected to make Hackney’s Council Tax rate 16th in the table of 33 London boroughs. The council tax for a band D property in Hackney will be £1,286.87 for 2006-2007. Overall the council tax is expected to raise £66.8 million in 2006-2007 and a further £339 million of investment will be funded through central government grant.
