Lido on track for summer fun

The Olympics will not be with us until 2012, but this summer will see the re-opening of Hackney's very own Olympic sized outdoor pool, the London Fields Lido.
The Lido, set for opening this summer after nearly 20 years of closure, will be the capital's only 50 metre heated outdoor pool, thanks to a £2.5 million Hackney Council cash investment.
The Council's Mayor, Jules Pipe, has high aspirations for the Lido's future. Speaking to HackneyToday he said: “The Lido is going to be a facility of which the whole community can really be proud. I also want it to be one which the rest of London will want to visit and hope that as an Olympic sized pool it could be a potential training venue for a team in 2012.”
Mayor Pipe visited the Lido site last week to check on progress and found things taking shape and work moving forward well.
After his visit, Mayor Pipe paid tribute to the people who have never given up hope on the Lido during its years of closure: “I know that the local community and London Fields User Group have kept the dream alive of re-opening for years and now we are in a position to pay back those years of commitment with a facility of which Hackney can be really proud.”
