Kings Hall Leisure Centre
Following a serious fire at the Kings Hall Leisure centre, the building remains closed while Fire Service and Police investigations continue into the cause of the blaze.
The Council, working closely with GLL (Greenwich Leisure Ltd) who manage this and other leisure facilities in Hackney for us, are working hard to make alternative arrangements for as many users of the centre as possible.
The building will have to stay closed while we repair the extensive damage, however the council will repair and reopen the Kings Hall Leisure Centre as soon as possible. We will be able to start that work once we have full details of the damage.
Once the Fire Service and Police have completed their investigations, and the area declared is structurally sound and safe to enter, the Council and insurers will be able to complete their assessment of the fire and water damage.
Clearly the Fire and Police services’ work must be completed first, but as we are checking the parts of the building that we can get into already in order to speed up the damage assessment.
The Council and GLL are currently working together to find appropriate alternative facilities for as many users as possible; however it will not be possible to re-provide every service for every one. There are a number of sports centres in neighbouring boroughs and we are negotiating with authorities there to see what use we can arrange for Hackney residents.
We will be contacting the various Kings Hall user-groups directly to let them know what arrangements we are able to make for them. This will include school swimming groups and holders of the various ‘membership’ and concession cards which entitle Hackney residents to use our facilities, as well as casual users of the centre.
There will be further updates to this website as more information becomes available.
