Safer Roads

Follow the black and white road

Moves to make Hackney roads safer have won London-wide recognition and a prestigious award.

A cut in accident rates and a programme to upgrade all the borough’s zebra crossings, helped the Council clinch the London Transport Road Safety Award for 2007.

A drive to ensure all Hackney schools have a travel plan that encourages people to use more environmentally friendly transport was also a factor in winning the accolade.

The Council was praised for its ‘excellent results and some innovative schemes’ at the award ceremony on 25 April.

It’s worked hard on improving pedestrian safety in the borough, as well as enhancing conditions for cyclists, motorcyclists, car, bus and coach passengers.

Reduction in road casualties

Hackney’s Road Safety Team has already exceeded its Government set casualty reduction targets for 2010, achieving a 44 per cent reduction in all fatal and serious road casualties, a 56 per cent reduction in fatal and serious child casualties and a 31per cent reduction in all slight casualties.

In addition, with support from the Road Safety Education Team, 58 out of 97 Hackney schools now have a travel plan.

Cllr Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: "This is a wonderful and well deserved accolade for Hackney Council, which recognises the accomplishments of our Road Safety and Traffic and Transportation teams.

“Making Hackney's roads safer is an integral part of the Council's transport vision. Significant improvements have already been made in the borough and we will expand on these in order to meet the high targets we have set for future years."

The awards, organised by Transport Times, are open to all London boroughs and organisations working to make a difference to transport in London.

Hackney has also now been short-listed for the National Transport Awards – winners to be announced in July.

School Travel Plan Programme

The School Travel Plan (STP) programme aims to cut ‘school run’ congestion by encouraging pupils, parents, staff and visitors to ditch the car, and walk, cycle or take public transport instead.

There are now only 39 schools in Hackney without an approved School Travel Plan (STP), but they can take advantage of a series of workshops to help them complete one by March next year.
