Mayor and Council Results

Re-elected Mayor Jules Pipe and candidates waiting for the final results

Mayor Pipe clinches second term

Hackney voters have re-elected Labour’s Jules Pipe as their Mayor for the next four years. Speaking from the count, which took place on Friday, 5 May, Mayor Pipe told Hackney Today: “I am delighted that Hackney voters have put their trust in me to run the Council for another four years.

“In my first term our administration achieved financial stability for the Council and genuine local improvements, such as cleaner streets, better recycling facilities, new secondary schools and falling street crime.

“Now we want to concentrate on making Hackney an even better place to live and providing local facilities that people can be really proud of.”

Mayor Pipe won 44 per cent of the vote on first preferences and reached the required 50 per cent on second preferences. The Conservative candidate Andrew Boff came in second place with 16 per cent of first preference votes.

Council election results in as Labour holds Hackney

LABOUR took 44 out of a possible 57 seats in this year’s Council Elections to maintain its strong majority over the other parties. The Conservatives won nine seats, the Liberal Democrats three, while the Green Party clinched the remaining seat.

Labour’s majority on the Council remained unchanged from the last Council Elections four years ago. The count for the Council seats and for Hackney’s elected Mayor took place on Friday 5 May at Hackney Town Hall.

Hackney’s Chief Executive and Returning Officer Penny Thompson thanked all the Council’s election staff, the political parties and agents for their help in making sure the election ran smoothly and in a spirit of “good humoured” cooperation.

The borough wide turnout figure for all 19 Wards was 34.41% compared to 31.88% in 2002.

The Mayoral turnout figure was 32.24% compared to 26.34% in 2002.
