Hackney Credit Union - A new low cost loan and savings scheme for Hackney
The new Hackney Credit Union has opened its doors for business, offering low cost loans and competitive savings accounts for the borough’s residents. Mayor Jules Pipe was on hand to officially launch its first branch at 225 Mare Street, which was also marked by a recognition event at Hackney Empire. He was joined by over 100 local supporters who have been involved in its establishment.
Welcoming the Credit Union, Jules Pipe said: “The Council has backed the development of the Credit Union and we’ll continue to back it because we believe it’ll play a vital role in the life of this borough.” As recognition of this the Council has agreed to establish payroll deduction facilities for its own staff.
The Mayor also opened his own account and became one of the 250 people who have already become members of the new community bank. “We’re looking to have at least 1,450 new members this year, so to have this level of response within the first couple of weeks is amazing,” enthused Gareth Evans Manager. Upon opening his account, the Mayor emphasised that everyone who lives or works in the borough should consider opening one.
The Credit Union is not just for the financially excluded, everyone can benefit from being a member, knowing that they are investing in their community and that their money will give them a personal return. It also helps generate wealth that will be invested back into Hackney. The Credit Union provides a range of straightforward and affordable financial services, including saving accounts, free life insurance and access to low-cost loans based on the person’s track record with the Credit Union. “Its simple to join”, explained Gareth Evans, “just complete the application form and bring it along to our office at 225 Mare Street, with two forms of identification and the money to start your account.” To find out more call 020 8986 6868 or see www.hackneycreditunion.co.uk
