Alternative sports stars’ showcase

BMX World Champion Phil Dolan and street basketball star Tom Conner will put on a free display as part of a Hackney’s drug awareness campaign Tackling Drugs Changing Lives on Thursday 26 October.
BMX legend Phil will show off his skills from 1pm to 2pm in the BMX area of London Fields. The eye-catching event aims to promote healthy lifestyle options to young people in Hackney as an alternative to drug use. At the same time, street basketball star Tom Connor will demo his freestyle moves, tricks and extreme streetball talents. Extreme sports are growing in popularity in urban settings with participants mastering balance, new tricks and routines.
The event has been created in a fun and interactive way for young people to discover more about extreme sports and SUB19, Hackney’s young person’s substance misuse service. SUB19 supports young people in making healthy informed choices and workers will be on hand to provide culturally attuned drugs education leaflets and make contact with young people in a relaxed and friendly environment.
Phil Dolan is three times world Flatland BMX champion.
This event is a collaboration between Hackney Council’s Drug Action Team and Sporting Champions. To find out more about the event please call the DAT’s Training Coordinator Ciaran O’Hagan on 020 8356 2179.
