Hackney Wins Cycling Award
Cycling plaudits continue to mount up for Hackney Council’s Streetscene, winners of the London Cycling Awards 2007 Best Cycling Facility award, presented by the London Cycling Campaign (LCC) on Tuesday October 16, for improving routes for cyclist in the borough.
The London Cycling Awards aim to recognise and celebrate the greatest contributions to increasing and enhancing cycling in the capital. Hackney won the Best Cycling Facility award for its ‘permeability project’ - a range of measures to remove obstacles that hamper cycling, such as raised kerbstones at the start of a cycle route.
Councillor Alan Laing, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “The Council is delighted to receive this award in recognition of our ongoing efforts to encourage cycling as a sustainable form of transport. The work to develop and improve cycling facilities in the borough demonstrates our commitment to making Hackney a cleaner, safer, greener place to live work and visit.”
This year’s award complements Hackney’s Best Bike Borough award success at the London Transport Awards 2006 and acknowledgment as a Cycling Demonstration Town by Cycle England.
