Lido to open in October
The overhaul of London Fields Lido is nearing completion and will be ready to make a splash for swimmers this October, in time for half-term.
The pool is now tiled and the changing rooms are being finished off for the resurrection of a local treasure. The London Fields Lido was originally built in 1932 when outside swimming was a very popular pastime. Lidos sprang up across the country, but later fell into decline. The London Fields Lido shut in 1988. Now, thanks to a Mayor Pipe commitment to re-open the Lido, the pool is set for a renaissance.
When it re-opens the Lido will be the only outdoor, heated, Olympic-size pool in London, and a huge boost for swimming for residents of all ages and abilities.
The building work should be completed at the end of September, after which the operators, GLL, will be able to finish kitting out the site. They will then invite a variety of groups and clubs in to use the pool at the start of October, with a formal opening planned for the middle of the month.
The Lido will open throughout autumn and winter as there is user demand - it should attract more than just hardier types as the pool and changing rooms are heated. However, it is the summer which is expected to bring large number of swimmers to Hackney’s ‘urban beach’.
Ultimately, there will also be a seasonal roof to encourage more swimmers during winter. When the Lido opens, the Council will unveil the shortlisted proposals for the roof to be installed in autumn 2007.
