Equality Standard for Local Government (ESLG)
The Equality Standard is a nationally recognised framework, which is used to assess a Council’s performance in terms of equality and diversity best practice. When used effectively it can help a Council identify and meet diverse needs, recognise and take action to address actual or potential disadvantage, monitor outcomes for diverse groups and plan strategically for a fair and equal future.
The Equality Standard requires each Council to apply the framework to all the six equality strands (race, gender, disability, faith/ belief, sexual orientation and age).
The Standard comprises of 5 levels and relates to all areas of a Council’s work including service delivery and employment practice:
- Level 1: Commitment to a Comprehensive Equality Policy
- Level 2: Assessment and Community Engagement
- Level 3: Setting Equality Objectives and Targets
- Level 4: Information systems and monitoring against targets
- Level 5: Achieving and reviewing outcomes
Hackney Council has self-assessed at Level 3 of the Equality Standard in May 2008.
