Hackney's Population
Population figures for the London Borough of Hackney are highly contested - as they are in several other boroughs. Figures vary significantly - and different figures are used for different purposes. The official statistics produced by the Office of National Statistics - see below - provide the lowest numbers. These are used wherever national comparisons are required, and are used as a base to calculate other official statistics, such as the employment rate.
The Greater London Authority produces two sets of estimates (High PLP and Low PLP) arrived at through different methodologies, based on the official statistics but incorporating borough level knowledge including planning projections. The GLA produces projections that are used by the boroughs and government to estimate school rolls in coming years.
In 2007 Hackney commissioned further research on the population in Hackney and this was found to be 6% higher than the official figures.
Obviously getting the population figures accurate is a great challenge. It is also very important as it is used to determine the funding of local government, schools and local health services. It is also critical in the design of new public services to estimate the demand now and into the medium term.
To give a sense of the differences the 4 estimates of the population for 2007 are:
- ONS MYE 2007: 209, 700
- GLA (low) 2007:216, 197
- GLA (high) 2007: 219, 281
- Hackney study 2007: 223,171
Each also demonstrates greater variation at the ward level.
Below are the most recent official statistics.
