Stillbirths

If the parents are married or in a civil partnership, either parent can register the stillbirth.

If the parents are not married or in a civil partnership and want the father’s name or the second female parent’s name to appear on the certificate, both parents must attend the registration.

When a child is stillborn, the doctor or midwife that was present at the birth or examined the body will issue a medical certificate of stillbirth.

This certificate should be scanned and sent to registrars@hackney.gov.uk so the registration can take place.

Once the stillbirth has been registered, we will scan and email the white form directly to your chosen funeral directors or to the bereavement midwife that is arranging your baby’s funeral.

The emergency death service is available 7 days a week.

A registrar will be available by phone and can issue the white form that will allow the burial to take place on the same day.

We can only issue a white form if an acceptable medical certificate of cause of death (MCCD) is emailed to registrars@hackney.gov.uk and there is no reason for the death to be referred to the coroner.

We can assist between the following hours:

• Monday to Friday: 9am to 4.30pm
• Saturday and Sunday: 9am to 11am
• bank holidays (excluding Christmas Day): 9am to 12 noon
